What is a QR code?
QR codes (Quick Response codes) are a useful tool for connecting physical spaces and processes to online destinations. By scanning a QR code with a mobile device, users can quickly access information such as websites, documents, or contact details.
QR codes are image files consisting of a unique pattern that you can associate with a digital endpoint (see example below):

Where should I use a QR code?
- Printed Material: Flyers, posters, tickets, brochures, instructions, packaging, etc.
- Physical Spaces: Event displays, signage, etc.
- Do not rely on QR codes for material published digitally, as there is not a direct way for someone to scan something that's already on their screen. Instead, consider URLS and clickable short links for digital content.
** Note that QR codes require users to have smartphone access; plan to provide alternative solutions for those without smartphones.
How can I create a QR code?
There are many free and reputable QR code generators available online. Here are some options:
- Adobe Express (https://www.adobe.com/express/feature/qr-code)
- Canva (https://www.canva.com)
- QR Code Generator (https://www.qr-code-generator.com)
- GoQR (https://www.qrstuff.com)
- bit.ly (https://bitly.com/pages/products/qr-codes)
- Google Chrome: You can generate QR codes directly from a webpage in Chrome by right-clicking and selecting “Create QR Code for this page.” (Note that the dinosaur in the center of the code is Google Chrome branding and cannot be removed; try one of the alternatives above if you want something more neutral.)
These generators will provide you with an image file of your QR code in various formats like PNG, JPG, or SVG that you can download and include in your materials.
Best Practices:
- Test Before Use: Ensure the QR code works by scanning it yourself to verify the link is correct.
- High Contrast: Use high contrast between the QR code and its background to ensure it’s easy to scan.
- Size and Placement: Ensure the QR code is large enough to be easily scanned and placed where it’s easily visible.
